Default Connaughts badge

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WW1-BADGES...3D371546202753

An interesting lot and worth far less than if the backs had not been cut off. The 1941 REME badge is out of place.

Interestingly the Connaughts does not have the usual void under the crown found on pre-war badges.

The 'BY DAND' Gordons with the space is typical of an early badge.

From the single photograph, I would suggest the Connaught Rangers is voided, but, the residue from any polish once used makes both it and the others look rather odd.

Smile Shield

It does say that there is one badge which was added as a replacement, presumably the REME 2nd pattern which is post WWII.

.
Alan,
I always thought the horse and lightening REME badge was introduced in 1947. Was it not?
I also thought all Connaught Rangers badges were voided below the crown. Was there an EI unvoided issue during WW1?

Yes sorry my typo 1947 not 41 but that is why the REME one is the one out of place.

The original sealed pattern was fully pierce however it's likely that there were some other makers' variations that were not fully pierced. The problem is differentiating WW1 variations with the copies.

Thanks, Alan, an interesting lot.
The NZ Fern badge is of Boer War vintage not likely to have been worn in WW1.
Cheers, Tinto

It's KEH and appears to be genuine but as you say is some years before WW1. As with all these things it's impossible to accurately date when they were assembled.

Thanks Alan,
I'm glad my concept of those two badges wasn't too far out.

Question Shield fixing

Whilst I hope the person who bought this shield does not decide to take the badges off and sell them individually, I wonder just how the badges are fixed to it, the Connaught Rangers seems to have a staple holding it to the board, but apart from that not much of a clue as to how the others are fixed.

From the picture of the reverse nothing is shown sticking through, so maybe the loops and sliders were removed and the badges glued in place.

Any other ideas?

Rob

If you look carefully they appear to be nailed on.

Cool Got it nailed

Andy,

Forgive my failing to notice the nails, yes some are obvious now you mention it, but not all from what I can see, the smaller badges such as the grenades don't show any sign of nails that I can see.
