Default 1st Western Ontario Badge

Hello all

I recently picked up this 1st Western Ontario badge with a group of other badges.

I know very little about Canadian badges and the only reference I can find on the internet and my reference books refers to bi-metal badges for this regiment.

is this an OR's badge or just a variant?

There are two small holes in the badge, one in the crown and one at the bottom of the numeral 1. What is the point of the holes?

Thanks in advance.

Dennis

The wm overlay has been taken off, it was secured with 2 copper or brass wires.

Hi Dennis. A damaged badge, missing the overlay.

Thanks Bill and Magpie, I appreciate the advice on the Western Ontario badge, I would never have guessed that the overlay was missing, not the sort of construction we see down under.
