Unknown Australian Button
Here another australian button found on Dunkirk's beaches, probably a ww1 button. Is this a military cap or blazer's button ? Small size, white metal about 9 milimeters large. Thanks.

Hi Vincent
The badge on the button is the Australian Coat of Arms which came into use after 1901, however this has never been used as a military button. The only button used on Army uniforms since about 1910, during WWI was a Kings Crowned map of Australia with Australian Military Forces. This was used until about 1953, there are many minor varietes of this button. No QC buttons of this patern were issued. Regimental and Corps buttons were then introduced.. I have checked Jeff Cossum's book, Buttons of the Defence Forces of Australia and it is not shown. I hope that this helps. Cheers Phil. |

08 Australian Commonwealth Line.jpg Due to the SEVEN POINTS STAR, I would give this old button to the AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH LINE - 1914 / 1928 also known as AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH GOVERNMENT LINE of STEAMERS - see full details (with confirmation of coat-of-arms) on http://www.flotilla-australia.com/acl.htm - on other side, MILLER RAYNER is a famous naval outfitter supplying very nice embroidered cap badges !!! a+alco

Australian button
Thanks to Lancer 17 and to Alco. Your informations are useful for me.
The Australian military force button ww1 was already found by the same way as this coat of arms button. There had been an hospital during ww1 near the place where some Australian and New Zealand buttons were found (see photo)...as often when ww1 buttons and cap badges are found... |

australian button
Thank you Alco for posting this cap badge.
Both registration numbers 666070 and 666126 (button and badge) have been issued c. 1919,1920. I am aware that collectors use both identities for this button, i.e. Australian Customs and Australian Commonwealth Line You have given strong evidence that the shipping line identification is correct. So far I have found no evidence that Australian Customs used this design. references: http://www.oldcopper.org/registered_...tion%20Numbers http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/li...mmonwealth.htm |
