WW1 Newfoundland Regiment button
Just picked up a nice, unmarked WW1 Newfoundland Regiment button and wonder if it was common for them to be unmarked.

Hello
A nice button. I have one similar but not quite the same so far as the shank is concerned but mine is unmarked as well. I don't think it is unusual to find unmarked buttons for this or any other unit for that matter. There is one on ebay at the moment which carries a backmark of 'E Armfield & Co Ltd Birmingham' so clearly not all 'Newfoundland' buttons were unmarked. According to Eric Smylie's book this pattern of button was used by the Newfoundland Regiment (later the Royal Newfoundland Regiment) and also by the Newfoundland Forestry Corps. It is always possible that this might explain the marked/unmarked buttons but that is pure speculation on my part! Regards Roger |

Hi Chaps
I just have one example in my collection and it's identical to the button in the original post, I've also seen others the same. So, as Roger says, definitely not uncommon to find them without a maker. David |

NEWFOUNDLAND
Hi All
WWI period Newfoundland Regiment buttons may or may not have manufacturer marks depending on which manufacturer they were ordered from and which lot from a particular manufacturer. This is true of the 1st pattern with the caribou head and 2nd pattern with coat of arms. I don't believe any co-relation between regiment and FC buttons as FC items came from regiment stocks. I believe the few specialty FC items that are around like the FC over NFLD or FC over NEWFOUNDLAND were private purchase items that members of the unit ordered. I stand to be corrected on that but I have not found anything to indicate that unit was issued any insignia other than standard regiment issue. Regards Don |
