It looks like 1 SCOTS, 2 PWRR, 2 LANCS and 4 RIFLES will form the Ranger units, so it’s only just a rebranding of the existing Specialised Infantry Group. It won’t “draw off the best” from other units but they wil get priority for new infantry recruits.

The name ‘Rangers’ was mooted for what became the SFSG (still known as 1 PARA). I won’t be at all surprised if the ‘Ranger’ tag just fades away again when the initial fuss dies down, and the traditional regimental titles are kept.

Interesting mention of an “additional infantry unit” to boost 16 Air Assault Brigade, but which one? The remaining Specialised Infantry Group Gurkha Bn? Alternatively, will the new brigade make the SFSG redundant and 1 PARA return to airborne duties with 16 Bde?

Can you remember Gen Mike Jackson and his Golden Thread to preserve the heritage of axed regiments? The Mercian Battalion ( Cheshires, Worcesters, Sherwood Foresters - Notts and Derby - and Staffords - North and South -) will have so many golden threads I dread to think how the service dress will cope.
As the small print of the Defence Review emerges it will be interesting to see if the Guards, Paras, Rifles and Scottish Regiment suffer any losses - and I don't regard transfer to the Rangers as a loss. Stand by for 1st (Rifles) Battalion, 2nd (Scottish) Battalion et al. To complete my cynical assessment I would ask you to
look at the clout or patronage enjoyed by the survivors.

Yep, still got one of those posters tucked away in the garage. Remember when people used to just be happy to collect the badges to match that poster?

This album attempted to show the regular British Army in 1989 based on the cap badge poster:

https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...p?albumid=3864

Then in this album how it looked in 2019 and 30 years later:

https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...p?albumid=3865

But how will it look in another 30 years?

Tim

PWRR 2012. Rather small image, but it is the US Army RANGER tab above the Tiger.

If the SNP get their way, at some time in the future the Royal Regiment of Scotland will not be part of the British Army.

"Scotch on The Rocks" by Douglas Hurd's a good little book on Scottish Independence written back in the late 60's, televised during the early 70's.
I remember little from reading it back then but it made mention of the amalgamated and numbered Scottish regiments.

Ah yes, that photo was shown on this forum?
That officer was ahead of his time.

There was mention in the media recently of Prince Charles supporting the idea of a Sikh Regiment in the British army.
Given the move towards Americanish unit names - could they be The Indian Scouts.

How about a regiment of Londoners - The Dick Van Dyke Cockerney Geezers?

Sorry, first cup of caffeine's just kicked in.
