It was a popular theme, I have a few postcards from the time referring to the Kaiser, his phone number in hell, that sort of thing.

I was sent this photo some years back. The British one does turn up from time to time, the New Zealand one less so.

I recall reading that the stated aim of the NZ group was to "root out the Hun hog".

How many of those badges have lasted 100 plus years, I wonder?

Anti German League, 1915? Were the Royal family exempt?

A protest against immigrants coming over here and taking our beggars jobs?

Hi Leigh

Hmmmmm....yes, that was probably one that they chose to ignore...

The full title was the Womens' Anti-German League and they have left behind a wonderfully xenophobic paper trail of vitriol.

The last one of these that I heard of turned up on online auction and had clearly been "dug" from a midden or similar. Despite its condition it fetched an eye-watering price.

It all had consequences, Prince Louis had to quit and the Royal family changed their name!
