Nursing Council of High Commission Territories
Can anyone identify this interesting badge/brooch, when it was worn and by whom?
I'm guessing it was for Basutoland, Bechuanaland or Swaziland. Mark on back has "Shield/STG/a/S*A*M", South African Mint? Thanks, John |

Post war HCT (Basutoland, Bechuanaland and Swaziland) nursing council badge to probably 1953 when crown would have changed. The South African Mint 'a' mark is for 1948.
Nurses were recruited out of the UK from the 1920's to work in the three HCT of Southern Africa. Not sure when the HCT Nursing Council was formed, but suspect post WWII. This would have been worn by a nurse who had registered with the council. Not everyone registered though. Nice badge and one I am still missing from my Southern African civilian nursing badge collection. Steven |
