43 or 48 Recce?
I am currently compiling (cross referencing really) a list of 43rd Recce fatalities and have found two chaps on the CWGC website who are listed as 48 Recce.
5190573 Pte Victor Harvey 04/01/1942 3388838 L/Cpl David Jones 15/07/1943 Several people have suggested it may be possible it's a CWGC error but I'm not sure and wanted to ask your advice. Could it be that they were injured in training whilst (briefly) 48th Recce, went to hospital / discharged and later died but were never part of 43rd Recce so are listed under 48 Recce, or am I completely wide of the Mark? I would be glad of any help or advice please. |

Hi Glosters Cloth,
Just for interest, CWGC do make errors, i am currently in the process of getting a headstone replaced to one of my ancestors, incorrectly named. They work off documents received which can also be incorrect. Their site also lists the middle name of another ancestor incorrectly, the initial is however the same so other than family no one would know. Regards Mark |

I believe 48th Recce never existed. Furthermore, neither is mentioned in the 43rd Recce Roll of honour in This Band of Brothers.

Apologies, I posted too soon, Joslen has:
48 Bn 20.11.41- 7. 1.42 43 Bn 8. 1.42- 5. 6.42 43 Regt 6. 6.42-31.12.43 43 Recce Regt 1. 1.44-31. 8.45 Doherty 'Only the enemy in front' p. 162 states that 48 Bn transferred to the Recce Corps on 14 October 1941, renumbered in January 1942 when moved to 43rd Division and the Recce Title came into use in April 1942. Which suggests Harvey was 48 Bn and Jones 43 Regt. Rgds, Thomas |

Many thanks Mark.
Happy that Pte Harvey is correctly listed as 48th, but still not sure what to think about Pte Jones. If it's not a CWGC mistake I'm wondering if he was injured, hospitalised and died having never served with the 43rd, so is recorded as 48th? |

Thomas,
Many thanks for your help as always. I had worked (cross referencing) on the 43rd RoH and had seen this too. For me at least, these two men seem to have been 'missed out' of the 43rd story and that saddens me greatly. Clearly Pte Harvey has a Gloucestershire Regiment service number and as the 48th was the forerunner of the 43rd, I'm going to put them both into my 43rd RoH, pointing out that they are listed at death as being 48th. I'm not sure what I can do re CWGC as I have nothing to amend from a correction point of view. Maybe the War Diary will have these men listed and I can update you and Mark in the coming weeks? Again, thank you for your help. |

Mark / Thomas,
Please see confirmation from the 43rd Battalion, Reconnaissance Corps War Diary of January 1942, confirming the death of Pte Harvey in Chartham Military Hospital on 04/01/1942. Cause of death was "cerebral Haemorrhage". He was buried at Hornchurch, Essex, on the 9th January 1942. I will keep looking for L/Cpl Jones (1943 death). Ken |
