Interesting Lot of SAS Cloth Insignia Acquired Today !
Would appreciate a little information regarding the cloth SAS insignia that I acquired today (particularly what period it was worn). I'm guessing that they are from the late 50's though to mid 60s.
It may even be possible to identify who the original owner/wearer was. I acquired them from a general antiques dealer who in turn acquired them through a house clearance. There were other badges with the lot which give us some clues, unfortunately, the antiques dealer believed the other badges to be far more valuable than I did and as a consequence, despite my best efforts I only came away with the cloth items pictured. The items which may provide clues were:- A brass shoulder title for Highgate School OTC A white metal RMA Sandhurst (EIIR) cap badge A selection of RMA Sandhurst GVIR and EIIR buttons (suggesting that he passed through RMAS circa 1953/54 (ish) A pair of gilt Gloucestershire Regiment officers collar badges A pair of bronze Gloucestershire Regiment officers collar badges A selection of kings crown Gloucestershire Regiment officers buttons A silvered "Wessex Brigade" officers cap badge Three officers silver/gilt SAS Collar badges (with lugs and securing pins) A selection of Anodised aluminium (staybright) SAS buttons. So it is probable that our candidate went to Highgate School and attended Sandhurst in the early to mid 1950s before Commissioning into the Gloucestershire Regiment. The Wessex Brigade cap badge would suggest that he was still serving with them circa 1958, the SAS cloth titles would suggest that he was serving with the SAS in the early 1960s (at the latest) whilst battledress was still being worn. I may have made some massive assumptions there but who knows ….. Anyway here are the badges that I acquired, all except the upswept wings are removed from uniform examples, the backing is slightly loose on that one , enabling me to photograph the internal padding (which may help in ageing them). Please be aware that they will be offered for sale shortly as they do not fall into my area of interest. PL |

Artists badges would suggest TA rather than regular.
Could be Wessex TA Regt. |

I think you have the dating correct, late 50's to mid 60's and 21st or 22nd SAS for the down-swept wings, for me the artists arm badge are the most appealing items in the lot and the beret badge. I assume you will get some pm's

Yes they did at the outset. It was some years before the Coys lost their regimental affiliations. This is recorded in 1 Wessex's history written by a former CO - I have a copy somewhere.
