Yes that is correct. The Pals Bn were raised by private and public subscription and initially bought much of their equipment and uniforms before the WD supplied kit was available.

A good, very typical example and becoming much harder to find these days for a reasonable price!

There is not a WW1 economy Mancs badge. The bi-metal badges were made through out the war.

Although the badge was bi-metal there were no overlaid parts so no significant saving in manufacture time. This was the same for the Kings, Lincs, Notts and Derby and the South staffs; all which had the same construction.

The Mancs Pals badges were bronzed but many have been polished down to their original brass.

Alan,

This could be the case with this one , if you look on the back of the badge it does look to have been bronzed at some stage in its life, just wearing off in the high spots.
AT first I just thought it was really dirty.

It can be nothing other than a Pals badge, I certainly never suggested it was anything else, neither, for that matter, did the original post which I quoted!

This is a typical example of a Manchester Pals badge worn by the 16th to 23rd (S) Battalions in WW1.

It is not an economy issue, or any other variety.

regards
