Default 1st "Cadet" Bn "The Buffs" (East Kent Regiment).

I thought I'd share this seldom seen cap badge, a very recent eBay acquisition.

A superbly detailed silver plated officers badge (?), standard "Buffs" dimensions, and fitted with folding blades. The base scroll bears the title "1.C.B. THE BUFFS".

As with many Cadet units, there appears to be very little information available, however a quick search reveals that they were certainly around c.1906

Printed Distribution State of The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) to 9 Nov 1906; comprising of: a nominal roll of officers; battalion strength and location for 1st and 2nd Bns; Depot; 3rd (Militia) Bn; 1st Volunteer Bn; Cadet Corps attached to 1st Volunteer Bn; 2nd Volunteer Bn; Cadet Corps attached to 2nd Volunteer Bn and 1st Cadet Bn. From the collection of the former Buffs Regimental Museum.

Any further information would be gratefully received (now part of my own collection and not an item for resale).

Andy

Superb badge.

I cannot see any mention of the unit in Westlakes "Register of Territorial Force Cadet Units 1910-1922 " ,whilst a lot of other Cadet Battalions are mentioned,so it may well have ceased to exist by 1910.

Peter,
many thanks! It appears each of the VB's had a Cadet Corps attached as well as the 1st C Bn?

Sorry Andy,

I meant Cadet Battalions affiliated to Regiments other than The Buffs .No entries for any cadet battalions affiliated to The Buffs in the book.

Peter,
no need to be sorry I meant the Buffs, as per the extract from records!

A gem of a badge tho!

Many thanks

Andy,

In 1909 the only Line Regiments with a Cadet Bn were the Cheshire Regt; KRRC; King's; Manchester Regt; Royal Fusiliers and Queens.

Other Cadet Corps/Bn.s not forming part of the OTC in East Kent were:

New College Schools, Herne Bay
St. Edmunds School, Canterbury
Sir Roger Manwoods School Cadet Corps (attached to 4th Buffs)

I would think its possibly the badge of the latter.

regards

Both St Edmund and Sir Roger Manwoods became an OTC in 1909. In both cases they had their own school badge.

Herne Bay School did became an OTC but I can't date its conversion from a cadet corps but it was after 1911.

Nice badge, I didn't bother bidding as I knew I wouldn't win. It looked like brass in the photo from memory.

Alan,

Due to its rarity and the fact that Andy's is an officers badge, maybe only worn by the officers.
Only one officer in 1909

I'll check the Bosley's catalogues, I've seen one in there before.

Go to page 123 for the Cadet Bn's details. Westlake states that the Bn was disbanded in 1907.

Keith,
just found one, sale catalogue 11 Nov 1998 (I only have a few old ones).

Item 285 and shown on Plate 3. Had an estimate of £75-125, not sure what it fetched?

Shortened description reads - "1CB The Buffs officers cap badge. A very scarce silvered example, with blades".

I've just found another.

26th Jan 2011 Lot 164. Made by Ludlow on loops, die cast silvered with applied gilt scroll.

Ex-Hugh King and sold for £220!

When did Ludski become Ludlow, this may give a clue to a date.

The same auction also had an Hugh King 1|CADETS|KENT shoulder title Lot 155, which went for only £28!
