Hi, due to the extraordinary kindness of a forum member, I am now the proud possessor of a presumed? 1st pattern sweetheart SAAC. It appears to have been made from a sand cast collar badge, so maybe that pattern was only ever made in sand cast form. Whatever, I am really pleased with it and will now have to rearrange my early SAAC display, hope you enjoy it as much as I do, best wishes Mike

Hi Mike,

That is an exceptional addition, and hats off to the generous individual, too.

Moreover, your facing pair of jerboas are superb; mine are all single examples. The larger variation of my selection is said to be an incipient 7th Armd Div sun helmet badge, and you’ll notice it is of the same pattern as your matching set worn by personnel of the 4ACR.

Alas, I am unaware of the specific date on which the honour of wearing the ‘Desert Rats’ badge was conferred. However, I wonder if the South African Department of Defence Archives has the 4ACR War Diary, which must have an entry for such a distinction among its pages.

Best,

Marcus

Hi Marcus, great assembly. With little or no photographic evidence of these little beauties in wear its hard to know which are which. I notice you have a pink one as well, this seems to have continued into the rat on khaki badges which are usually more or less the same styles. Maybe you should start something in the British section along the lines of show your rat varieties and maybe some ideas may occur. Especially if they can be identified with a person or specific time. Or even better some photos!!!!! Great collection and thanks for showing, best wishes Mike
