RA volunteers
Hi All,
opinions please on this RA Volunteers badge on Brittons site. I have consulted with Steve on this and have his permission to show the photo from the site. My concern is the right hand scroll where it meets the tail of the carriage - the scroll is not complete. is this an issue ? Otherwise, I like the lug position. Cheers, Mark |

Absolutely genuine as Simon says and a beautiful badge, just a shame about that fault.
I’d say £45 is the dealer going rate so question would be if you’re happy with that one for the price or prefer to hold out for a example with intact scroll. |

I honestly cannot see that fault. It looks complete and appears to attach to the trail as designed. ?

Other side, the ground/grass is cut short.

Is it me or has the scroll viewed from the rear come away from the grass base!
Not the best of badges IMHO. Tony.

I wouldn't worry about the trail end, it looks like one of the many variations that I've got.

It is the start of an early damaged die continuing to be used.

Marc, what is your opinion on this badge. It seems to have the same worn die fault as the previous post but also has as you can see, not a good stamping on reverse of upper scroll and crown. I’m also intrigued as to why the three tangs were cut off and “after market” lugs added. Best regards, D.J.

I’m sure those would’ve been the double tangs which look a bit like butterfly clips and are often found on early volunteer badges. These are not suited for regular bending back and forth to remove from the cap so must’ve broken regularly as the metal became stressed. This tang arrangement is rarer than loops so I suspect it was an early fitting and soon done away with due to these breakage issues. In the case of your badge I’d suggest a pair or two broke and so the others were removed to make the badge wearable again. Actually I really like the reverse of your badge, the rear definition on the bottom scrolls is often poorer on several of the RA, RGA, RFA vols badges. Yours is actually relatively crisp by standards and those vertical lines between the lettering are always a good sign I think of an early badge. Believe there is a similar RA Vols on eBay with double tangs N-S to demonstrate what I mean. |
