Default 63rd Halifax - HP or Glengarry.?

Hi Gents,

So I pulled out one of my all time favorite badges to do a little photography and in handling the badge I got to thinking about its use and wear.

The badge is my super nice 1910 63rd Halifax Rifle. Mazeas has this down as MM190 and a Glengarry badge. My question is concerning the identification as a Glengarry badge, as mine has two screw post (and nuts) to the rear which I normally associate with a helmet plate.

I was hoping the more experienced members could enlighten me a little? Would this still be correct for a Glengarry with the posts? or perhaps is it a helmet plate (although granted a little small).

Approximate size: 2" in hight by 1⅞" in width (or 50mm x 48mm).

Any clarification would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Roy.

Thank for that Tinto,

Very much appreciated. As mentioned one of my all time favorites and it was the badge that started me looking at Canadian badges. Just something about the design and quality of this beauty I couldn't resist.

A large/clearer photo attached for enjoyment.

Cheers, Roy.

Roy, with that type of fastener, it is likely a pouch badge or cross belt plate. Both of these accoutrements are traditional for rifles' regiments.

Hi Bill,

That crossed my mind too. But do you think the size would still work as it seems rather small for either of those? Not bothered either way just nice to know. By the way (if it makes any difference) it is in HM silver.

Approximate size: 2" in hight by 1⅞" in width (or 50mm x 48mm).

Cheers, Roy.

I have the OR version and I was under the impression that they where pouch badges. The Glengarry is similar to the current version badge but with "63" in it....or so I believe.

There is a dealer that has a silver hallmarked cap badge from that period, screws as well, might be part of this set.

On a side note, its a wonder that any survived over the years given how fragile they are.

Hi Todd,

Thank you for that. Yes a pouch badge would make sense too, especially given the size. Also agree on these surviving, but very pleased some have. Would like to see a pic of yours if possible?

Cheers, Roy.

Hi Todd,

VERY nice indeed, a lovely and rare example.

Can I ask Todd what the size it? it would be nice to compare it to my example.

Cheers, Roy.

Roy,

Dimensions are the same as yours. 50mm x 45mm-ish

Hi Todd,

Thanks you for that. It's an interesting dilemma, the 'pouch' badge appears to be slightly smaller (re Mazeas) and is absent the '63' from the center. And yet your badge has lugs and mine posts! If nothing it will keep us guessing!

Cheers, Roy.

Hi Todd,

Thank you for that, excellent. I think that is spot on for your badge. Do you think that would still work for my badge with threaded post thought.?

That is the bit I'm finding confusing

Roy.
