...mostly from trading with other collections, but over the years from various dealers as well...the militaria fair/auction scene here is currently healthy - possibly more so than the population...also have several pairs of boots and some headgear - slouch hats and helmets...(8{

Boots-privatepurchase_20200409_133221.jpg AIFBoots02.jpg AIFBoots05.jpg SlouchHat01.jpg SlouchHat07.jpg SlouchHat06.jpg Brodie03.jpg ...just a few (some very minor) items of mine...the British-made slouch hat has never had a badge applied on the brim...the Third Division, while they were commanded by Monash, were not allowed to wear the brim raised up on the left - an order that he rescinded in March 1918 when he became the Corps Commander and which he makes comment about in his post-war book: ANZAC to Amiens...this hat could be just such an example...I have over 1000 sepia, studio-portrait, photographs - hours of endless analysis to be made, there - in which less than a third of the slouch hats being worn are wearing the pleated pugaree which is to say that most of the A.I.F. wore either a piece of puttee or just wool-felt outside of the hat...(8{ Brodie02.jpg Brodie07.jpg Brodie08.jpg Brodie04.jpg Brodie05.jpg |

Favourites in that lot Can the Mods start a new thread with Martins items ?? Rob |

...missed off a few images on that last post...the brodie helmets are hard to find in original condition...one had been (period) re-issued from the British Army equipment depot at Le Harve where it was re-spray-painted - including parts of the liner!...personal clothing A.I.F. personnel - i.e. shirts, undershirts, socks - are never to be found...(8{

ANZAC - A ...
...of the 2 shirts, 1 undershirt, 2 ties, 10 pairs of socks (that all came together with a very washed-out slouch hat, a greatcoat and a tunic which were not being offered to me as the hat/tunic were going to a small private museum over in France - who did not want all of it - and the greatcoat was sold to a dealer up in London as being a British one because they fetch much more money that way, I was told) are marked to this particular bloke...I reckon it's this fellow who is the only "Salmons" on the entire 1919 Nominal Roll - although with a different first initial...that he was in the AASC / 2nd Divisional Train makes sense as along with the shirts/socks being offered to me came several pairs of the "Stohwasser" leather gaiters - both in the usual tanned leather and also in roughout finishes...these gaiters were issued to all mounted personnel (whether they were horse or cart mounted)...my Grandfather was in the 6th Coy. Field Engineers, serving at Pozieres where he was wounded for the second time by being blown off his feet on 1st September 1916 while preparing a jump-off trench in Box Lane - the pictures of him show him wearing the leather gaiters...(8{

...back on topic, here are the only A.I.F. orders that I have ever been able to find concerning the Galllipoli service badge - originally promulgated as far into the conflict as 29th October 1917, but later amended to include various other capacities for entitlement...there is no mention of an oxidised variant and along with the example that I have, which looks to be sand-cast, I reckon that it was quite likely made by a tinker out in the Middle East...(8{

Standard dismounted pattern breeches, a little less common is they're not Bedford-cord. I have a similar pair made of Bedford-cord by the CGCF as well as a mounted pair. Do you have a service dress cap? I've never seen an original for sale nor even in a private collection. I know of a leather one out there but not the more standard woollen one with the leather edging on the visor. For something that was made in the hundreds of thousands it would have to be one of the rarest pieces of Aussie First War uniform, much rarer than slouch hats or boots. Your have an amazing collection and in fantastic condition too! ... green doesn't adequately describe my complexion Dan |

Close but not quite, much like Aussies wearing British tunics, not wrong, but not Australian. Nice cap all the same, but the search continues... Dan |
