The AA Units on Malta did not come under command of AA Cmd.

The pattern of AA Cmd badge on the BD is post 1945, if I am correct this blouse once belonged to a member of 50th HAA Regt RA formed in 1947 by the redesignation of 4th HAA Regt RA which had served on Malta during WWII. The removal of the shoulder designations would have been done as per regulations when they became obsolete, and the formation badge and regimental flash stayed on till the demise of AA Cmd in 1956.

Hi, thankyou very much, that explains the missing insignia, and I thought he was re-using them on another B.D. I nearly replaced them. Just shows never meddle with bits.

Smile AA Command

Having followed this thread through, I can only say how nice to see a good range of Artillery cloth formation signs, interestingly, the Home Guard wore the AA Command formation sign on B.D. with the county designation plus the 101 numeral.
Unfortunately I have no pics of my B.D. tunic, it has featured in the book of the Cambridgeshire Regt produced some years ago.

The Home Guard Rocket Batteries had the numbers 101, 102, 103, & 104, the Heavy AA Btys had 71, 72, 73, 74, 171, 172, & 173. Worn with the County letters such as LON over 101 was was worn by members of 193 (101 County of London Home Guard) 'Z' Anti Aircraft Battery. In some of the Batteries the AA Cmd badge was used as a 'proficiency badge' as the HG were not allowed to wear it until deemed proficient in AA duties, again in some units the same applied to the lanyard. The post WWII HG continued to wear the AA Cmd badge until its demise in 1956.

14th Coast Regiment RA, 1941-1946.
430th Coast Regiment RA (orkney and Zetland( (TA), this badge continues to be worn by the Army Cadet Force.
Orkney and Zetland Defences, 1947-1956, redesignated in 1956 as 861 Independent Light Anti Aircraft Battery RA (Orkney and Zetland) (TA).

540th Coast Regiment RA, Dover.
This is a drawing taken from the cover of the Regimental history, it was also used on notice boards and doors. I have included it in case one of you have the cloth version and do not know it.

Marc,

As discussed Regimental badges for:

147th (EY) Regt RA (worn on both sleeves with handle to front)
191st Fd Regt

304th Fd Regt also wore the same badge as 147, but it was worn on the left sleeve only (first scan.)

All embroidered / felt. Apologies for the variable picture quality, will try and improve these.

Michael

I was about to take the pics. you asked for and I was a bit confused. Are you counting the very top line as row one. If so I take it that you want pics. of 102 Coastal Bdg. and row 6 is for 52nd.AT. 22 AT and Dems., is this correct. John.
