M it is a Royal Welsh Fusiliers Officers (OSD) collar badge! Have a look in my RWF album for others!

That's the earlier pattern collar badge. In the later ones the tail of the Dragon has a loop in it.

If its a royal welsh Fusiliers officers collar it will date from 1902 to 1920 when the spelling changed to the Welch.

Malc,
This one is a collar so no change in spelling as there are no letters on the badge. John, No sorry, only that it is the first pattern they wore of this type. I think you would be safe in assuming pre and 1st World War. Hwyl, |

Welsh Dragon Badge
Thanks for all the answers so far.
I bought this badge on ebay a bargain I think at £3.60. I have had one or two disappointments so far in my badge collecting (I’m new to this game), but just the way this badge feels is right it has to be genuine. Thanks once again. PS: the very small makers badge says J.R. Gaunt, London Last edited by Madagas2002; 17-11-10 at 10:09 PM. |

There will be a "sealed pattern" somewhere in the MoD (the National Army Museum and Regimental Museum should also have copies), which will give precise dates for each "pattern" (new type) of badge.

intersting comment on the looped tail. I was told that to tell the differance between a Welsh dragon and an English dragon was that the Welsh dragon always had a looped tail and the English dragon did not, for cap badges anyway. It is interesting to hear that there are Welsh dragons with un-looped tails as well! There goes the theory!!! Cheers, Dave

Toby, if you've found the Sealed Patterns - let alone Pattern numbers - for officer's badges, I'd be delighted to know about them. The ACD ledgers etc at TNA have OR's P nos and the IWM and NAM have OR's SPs and the NAM has examples of officer's badges but no specific officer's SPs !!! J

I think you'll find that the reference you're quoting relates to the Buffs dragon which does not have a loop. With regard to dragons used in Welsh badges most do have loops but not all. The one discussed in this thread and the early Monmouth pattern do not, amongst others. Theory sinking I feel. Regards, Kevin |

I've been watching this one with interest! Although I am not a collar badge collector, I do have a fair few RWF badges. In my opinion the reason is very simple the later collar with a beast with a looped tail has a Dragon on it whereas on the earlier example without a loop the beast is a Griffin! Both mythical creatures but very different! Images to follow in daylight!
