Unknown 13th Light Infantry badge
Hi All,
can anyone ID this badge. I thought Indian or maybe an early Somerset LI? It's made of steel, not a lead war cast. b 105.jpgb 106.jpg Thanks Iain

A local find, Iain?
Yes, I would think 13th Somersetshire, they famously spent time in Colony. Quote:

13th Light Infantry badge
I believe there is a previous thread on this badge, I have a white metal die-struck version and it was on my Somerset Light Infantry board.
However, this was deemed as not being Somerset related. Rob |

The manufacture looks pretty typcal of Indian made badges, though the metal is very odd. The Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry, raised in 1947 has/had a 13th battalion and most Indian Army heraldry draws heavily on the British symbols and naming / numbering conventions, so it may be that or a fantasy pece for the tourist market if not a 'theatre made' Somerset badge from North Afrca or India.

Peter,
thanks for the input, as you say, unusual choice of metal. Most theatre cast badges were made of brass or lead Iain Quote:

Incidentally there is also the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry originated in Hamilton, Ontario on 11 December 1862 as the 13th Battalion Volunteer Militia (Infantry), Canada. It was redesignated as the 13th Regiment on 8 May 1900; as the 13th "Royal Regiment" on 3 January 1910; and as the Royal Hamilton Regiment on 1 May 1920. It was organised as a four battalion regiment with the 1st Battalion (perpetuating the 13th Battalion (Royal Highlanders of Canada), CEF) on the Non Permanent Active Militia order of battle

Steel, are you a professional metallurgist, Iain?
To be quite honest then, I would doubt that it is the 13th Somersetshire's, but, it would certainly be very nice if it were. |

Not professional Frank, but I know the difference between Steel, Lead and brass and if you check the photo of the reverse side you will see traces of rust elementary

I think some one said it was Australian, Macquarie Regt I believe, but I don't think there was any real certainty.
