Default KOSB Sporran Badge

Hi Guys,

Just checked eBay for the first time in a month and note that the small KOSB sporran badge is still being sold as a cap badge.

Let's put this one to rest and try to ensure that cap badge collectors are not purchasing something they don't need.

First photos are from the Imperial War Museums collection of badges from 1970 being dated either 15th June or 4th May of the year.

These are cards with hand stencilled titling where the badges are pushed through the card and further attached via tape. This is then stuck to the rear of the card by green wax and sealed with an inscription of

MINISTRY OF DEFENCE
ARMY OFFICERS
PATTERN ROOM

Note that at the time the cap badge was KC and in white metal. Sporan badge in QC and anodised aluminium.

The pound coin is for scale and is almost 22.50 mm across.

More to come...

Up to Berwick-upon-Tweed to the KOSB museum.

Meeting with the curator there he showed me a standard sealed pattern card of the sporran badge.

Sorry for poor piccy but the photo was taken in a dark corridor and with flash.

Pattern number 19611

Sealed 24th March 1966

Description - BADGE: ORGANISATION: KINGS OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS, PIPERS; WORN ON SPORRAN

Hope this is of interest.

Regards

Chris

Chris,

Great piece of work. It also puts to bed the idea that WM Q/C KOSB badges are anything other than commercially sold badges. If they were still wearing k/c bonnet badges with the q/c sporran then the later q/c bonnet badges ones would also be in a/a.

Some regts did go from k/c metal to metal q/c and then a/a q/c but not the KOSB.

Thanks Alan,

I've got a few more things up my sleeve like this but maybe not so important to a collectors wallet.

I'll post them when I get time and have sorted everything out.

Regards

Chris

When did the KOSB pipers wear a sporran with the badge discussed here, and when with the silver cantle with the 'dog and bonnet'?

Rgds,

Dunno, not my sort of thing but if you contact Ian Martin at the KOSB museum at Berwick-upon-Tweed I'm sure he will help. First class guy.

Chris
