anodised slider mystery
Heres one for Hagwalther or you other Anodised badge gurus.
Picture shows the back of an Anodised REME badge. The slider is copper alloy and riveted on, the back being shaped where the slider fits. My question is: Is this genuine, maybe a trial piece. If not why go to all that trouble for £1 badge. If done by squaddie would have been easier to claim it was lost in service and get QM to bill for new one. Any thoughts appreciated Gordon

This is a genuine 1950s/early 60s badge. The first a/a badges were criticised for the sliders breaking. The brass rivetted ones were one (short lived) solution. I have also seen them on a number of other designs as well as the REME.

Your right Alan,i have a number of GROVE MFG badges with a brass slider, but its slotted over a stump of aluminium which is then flattened to grip the slider.I have RA,Northamptonshire and Manchester badges of this construction.

Hi Gordon,
Genuine and authentic and if you don't want it I'll take it off you!!! Also used by Gaunt post 1973 on some of their J.R.GAUNT B'HAM badges. See attached image. Great looking domed hollow rivet too - common on Gaunt made badges. Regards Chris Last edited by hagwalther; 09-04-09 at 11:14 PM. |

For what it’s worth I also have a REME Anodised badge with a brass (?) slider. I could post a photo but it is exactly the same as turntostone’s badge.
All the best, Philip |

Here is a R.E. anodised badge with the brass slider attached by 2 small rivets .The scroll is also attached to the badge by 4 small rivets.

Isn't it odd that the backs of badges, these days - generally - are of more interest than the fronts...... |

Hi Mac, Some brass and other non aluminium metal sliders are found on early badges but J R Gaunt and Sons did make brass slidered anodised badges in both 'London' and 'B'Ham' marks later on. The Queens Regiment with an active service date from 31st December 1966 to 9th September 1992 is one badge often found with brass sliders. Badges marked 'J R GAUNT B'HAM' are deemed to be 1973 onwards. Regards Chris |
