Stan Hollis,VC - D-day
Watching local TV news tonight, there was an interview with the great granddaughter of Stan Hollis who served with the Green Howards and was the only soldier to be awarded the VC on D day for attacking and capturing two pill boxes. Consequently many lives were saved by his actions and many German troops surrended. However, I was stunned to hear that many people in his home town of Middlesbrough had never heard of him and consequently that a fund for a memorial to honour this man is struggling for donations by some £10000. I made a quick search on google for the Stan Hollis Memorial Fund and was able to make a quick donation by PayPal. No fixed figure is mentioned and people can donate as much or little as they want. Since the 70th anniversary is tomorrow, I wondered if members of the forum would make a small donation in memory of this very brave and humble man. Just a thought.
