Montgomery Imperial Yeomanry officers?
This photograph taken by a Newtown photographer possibly depicts three officers about to depart for the Boer War.
Newtown was once in Montgomery, but is now officially in Powys. C Coy of the Montgomery Yeomanry were based in Newtown and members of the regiment served with the 9th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa as the 31st and 39th Montgomeryshire Companies. Despite there being no insignia, apart from officer's rank, visible, is it possible to identify these officers as being from the Montgomeryshire Yeomanry? |

I am not an expert but it looks like they are wearing Infantry Pattern swords?

That had occurred to me too, but swords are not an area that I know much about. I have a mate who collects Montgomery Yeomanry items and he is always talking about Cavalry pattern swords so they must have some significance.
I will see if I can get a close up photograph of the buttons. |

The buttons seem similar to Light Infantry buttons in that they appear to have a stringed horn.

I see Newtown is close to Shropshire so could they be officers of a Volunteer Service Company of the KSLI prior to going to S. Africa?

Simon,
very good point, Newtown is probably the largest Welsh town to this part of Shropshire, Knighton is nearer but smaller and Montgomery is a bit further away. I was clearly over thinking the Newtown connection. Many Welshmen living along the border served in the K.S.L.I. or the Herefordshire Regiment for geographical reasons as the recruiting offices could be that that much nearer than those of a Welsh regiment.
