A few thoughts spring to mind on this beret.

Firstly, I've just come across a reference I was looking for that refers to 6DLI wearing a square scarlet badge backing on their khaki GS berets from 1943 onwards. On the adoption of the green beret in 1952 this was apparently changed to a red diamond. Perhaps this beret reflects a trial, or in-between design, version?

Secondly, I recall, in the days when the WRAC still existed, combinations of uniforms worn within UOTCs. For example, some female OCdts wore the WRAC beret and badge whilst others wore exactly what their male colleagues wore. There was also a variation in-between I came across where female OCdts wore WRAC berets with their UOTC capbadge (Exeter UOTC). As Liverpool UOTC wear a red patch on their beret could this be some similar hybrid?

Thirdly, might it be a beret for the Baloch Regiment in the Pakistani Army as they have a green beret/red square patch combination?

If there are any markings inside the beret they might provide an additional clue.
