I have three of these buttons.
The first is an early RAF one I bought from a mate at school for 50p along with several normal ones, they had belonged to his great uncle. It was only years later when researching the war dead of the school that I found he was a Battle of Britain pilot (56 Squadron) killed in June 1941. He was commissioned and got his new uniform, going home on leave for a weekend where he was photographed with his dad and brother. He returned to his squadron on the Sunday morning and was killed later that day. The family cut the buttons off and kept them and returned the uniform to the tailors.
My second is a later RCAF one which cost me £50 from a market. The dealer had bought 10,000 buttons from a Blue Peter bring and buy sale for £50 and checked every one, making his money back on that one!
My last came on a Flight Lieutenants uniform I bought on eBay. Described as 'with moth' I thought it was worth going for even if just for the insignia. I got it for under £30 and found the top button to be a reverse thread type!
