London Volunteer Battalion Officer 1915.
I photographed these pictures from the original some weeks ago and rather stupidly put the original photograph away somewhere. I should have written down the name of the officer before I put the photograph away. However, I think that his name was Clarke and that he served in the 7th London V.T.C. in 1915. I cannot find a matching badge in K&K so I would welcome your thoughts. It does rather look like the Essex Volunteer Regiment's cap badge, K&K 1617.

Hello,
That badge looks very much like several Junior Division OTC cap badges. Marlborough School; St.Pauls School, Kensington and Shrewsbury School all could fit. regards

However the cuff rank and uniform are VTC.
The 'light infantry' double braces on his Sam browne belt may be a clue. |

A great photograph.
Interesting that he is wearing collar badges. There is always the possibility that the Sam Browne and sword he is wearing is from previous military service. P.B.

I have now located the original photograph which is captioned, 'Major E.H. Coombe, 1/9th C London. V.B. 1914/18. I think that the C must be for County of London rather than City of London and would therefore be 9th (Stoke Newington and Hackney) battalion.
I actually have two copies of this photograph and one might be offered for sale in due course. Last edited by High Wood; 16-04-15 at 02:53 PM. |

K&K do not illustrate the cap badge worn by the 9th County of London battalion V.T.C. at least not in volume one.

Thank you for posting the image of the badge that I mentioned in my first post. I do not have one of my own to photograph so it is appreciated. I have not been able to find out what the initials E.H. stand for so, as yet, I am unable to research him further.

Stoke Newington VTC
HW,
Great picture! You've already identified the Corps, and I am pleased to be able to show you the badge. The 9th Btn of the County of London was 'Stoke Newington and Hackney', each with their own badge, neither of which features in K&K. Here is the Stoke Newington badge. Interesting to see photographic evidence of the same badge as a collar, which is common but not universal. Best regards, Tim |

Brilliant; I knew that there was one there somewhere.
I will be offering one of the two identical pictures of Major Coombe for sale. |
