I have had this badge amongst bits and bobs for a very long time and have been trying to identify it. I presume that it is a RM Commando cap badge, with Kings crown but I havn't been able to find anything coloured like this. Can anyone help identify it and how old it is please.
Not sure if I did it correctly before. Hopefully this is the image of the RM Commando badge that I am trying to identify. Last edited by Bill A; 03-08-19 at 04:38 PM. |

Hi
Probably WW1 or 2 and been painted for use in a frame or a display. Not official just something that someone has done to enhance the visual impsct of the badge. Regards Steve |

Would of been worn 1923 onwards up to change of crown with QE11 & as said coloured as part of display etc but no way official, also Royal Marine Commandos did not form until @ 1942 and the cap badge was and is worn ( now QC) by all in the RM Gerard

What makes it a "commando" badge?

Possibly a case of a new member of the forum asking for advice in their first post and simply using common RM badge sellers inaccurate terminology or otherwise simply confusing "RM' and "Commando' as being one and the same?

I just presumed, wrongly, knowing nothing about it, that it was Commando.
Whoever painted it did a very good job, it is really well done. So its nothing special sadly, so can go back in the box of bits and pieces. Many thanks for your help with this. |

Its a nice badge made as a sweetheart or as mentioned to be displayed, would expect a photograph in a frame and this mounted to frame? Keep it out on display!

I wonder if the artist had a copy of 'Badges of HM Services' to hand (published 1940,43, 46 etc)
Land mass in the version below showing the Empire ... they used to say 'the sun never sets on the British Empire' ... well I guess it has set now ;-) |

RM & Commando
Pat
Your assumption was not necessarily wrong. Royal Marines and Royal Marine Commandos, when formed, wore that same cap badge - it was the colour of the beret that changed for Commandos. In my opinion (for what little it is worth) as a former Bootneck, post war saw anyone completing training become a Royal Marine Commando so your terminology fits then. Royal has a forum which is titled Once a Marine Always a Marine yet all members were Commandos and I always see myself as a former Marine but I guess I was a Royal Marine Commando not a Marine and a Commando As for the badge, like Billy says - possibly a sweetheart item or done for a display ......... and it is special to some of course Ray |

A question is certainly not a comment.

Am pretty sure there are some bandies on the forum, certainly at least 2 who transferred from the band to the Corps as well. I believe the band has a similar forum but don’t have a clue what it is called Ray |
