Default SSF

The unit title in the late 70s was the Sultan's Special Force (SSF). Mike

Thanks Andy, Mike
Thanks for pointing out the correct unit title Mike, I found that most people sell these (mostly fake) described as Omani SAS, they were of course trained by the SAS and also operate in Sabre Sqns.

Default SSF

I came across my example today - sourced in the Sultanate in 1978 and measuring 64mm across - almost identical to yours. Mike

Some SSF items for you. Beret badges reading down are officers, SNCOs and ORs

SSF is an independant unit recruited from the Qara tribesmen of Dhofar. It is not part of the Royal Army of Oman.

As Mike has reminded me the central circular object is a Qara parrying shield. the real thing measures about 10-12 inches across and is a deep conical shape. Also the main element of the Firqa Forces badge. FF are also exclusively Qara tribesmen. The original members of both forces were largely ex-Adoo from the Dhofar war.

The SNCP's badge backing matches the beret colour!

I came across this today - from Formation Sign 109 of Jan 78 - 39 years ago the FS was not quite so smart, but it was just as informative. Mike

That's great Mike, thanks.
Today I picked up a rather eclectic bundle of cloth with more Oman Insignia, it seems the collecting gods are directing me, all mostly 70's I believe?

54 Bty will be able to identify the square Omani flash. I assume the QDG titles are to be cut down to be mounted on rank slides? Mike

Oman badges.

The top beret badge is c1986-1990 and lower one c1990.
The sleeve badge is the Sultan of Oman's Armoured Regiment c1986-2000.

So far I have not seen the small flag being worn, by the military. Of course it could be worn by Omanis on UN type deployments.

Thanks Marc,Mike
The small flag seems to be the early type before the small changes in the broadness of the vertical red and horizontal green stripe were made, although searching for this shows this type still used later.
