SAS Pants?
Hello Gents,
I recently purchased a lot that contained many things, one of which are these pants. I am looking to confirm what they are and current value, since this is not my thing. Thank you in advance for your feedback! Cheers

They're worth as much as someone is prepared to pay for them!
Windproof camouflaged trousers are not especially rare and were issued across the British army in WWII not exclusively to the SAS. Round about £100 to £150. The matching smock however is far more valuable and these fetch up to £500 in good condition on a good day on ebay with lots of references to SAS in the listing...

Thanks for your feedback. When I searched for this type of stuff, I came across this site. As you said, value depends on what people are willing to pay.

Pair on ebay-£91 at the moment. Write up on IWM site- http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/30097346
Regards, Paul. PS Silvermans tend to have high prices. This type of kit also issued during the Korean War. Last edited by wardog; 03-01-17 at 05:45 PM. |

They are what it says on the label, camo over trousers 1944 dated, most were issued to all units in Italy though no doubt some were also used by sf units. As already posted, about £100 or a bit more, though sometimes not that much!

Interestingly enough, I have one of these smocks that was “issued/given” to a 1st Can Para member upon him being discharged from the hospital in Belgium. They lost his Denison Smock and this is what they gave him as a suitable replacement. He wore this for the remainder of his time there and brought it back home with him.

Thanks Marc,
I had someone else say the same thing. The only reason I don't want to do that is they didn't actually come together. The smock is attributed to a 1st Can Para member, so simply keep it this way. Cheers

Well from a hsitorical perspective keeping the camouflage smock and trousers together makes sense, as there are no specific Denison camouflage trousers. BTW the only photos of the SAS wearing this smock I've come across tend to be post-war.

Then why is this smock often referred to as an “SAS Smock”, including on Silvermans site if you click on the link above .... Who was this smock initially intended for during the war? I have no clue to the answers to these questions, which is why I’m asking. Or is it simply using the letters SAS when selling something, people go cocoa bananas and willing to empty their wallet?
Thanks guy, Cheers!

These were still being issued in the late 1960s. There were huge stocks which were issued to Regimental/Bn QMS for issue on a no cost, no replacement basis. I was issued with two pairs in 1969 for adventure training in the Cairngorms. Smocks were harder to come by but were available.

It was originally intended as a camo windproof
But mate they were issued in vast amounts to the SAS post war. The French foreign legion used the camo windproof also with a full zip I believe?
Just like Stirling used a duffel coat and the LRDG (amongst others) used the troppal coat, although these items weren't designed specifically for SF , they were fit for the role these units were used in. |

It is also often claimed that the SAS used the drab over trousers in Gulf War I because the British no longer had any desert camo clothing. These are much the same as the camo trousers but plain drab coloured, though perhaps not windblock. Obviously when I sell this pair they will be listed as SAS desert camo...........type.
Back to the thread starters, originally they were WWII issue camo over trousers and smocks for all army personnel, though I have only read of them being issued in Italy in after the invasion.
