Hi

These small holes were used to allow the solder to flow properly and also enable the maker to clean the badge thoroughly after plating or soldering.

They are also seen on some WW1 Australian gold tribute medals which are hollow-backed and then have a plate soldered on. The medal looks quite substantial but you pick it up and a passing breeze takes it out of your hand!

There are solid examples but they were no doubt much dearer!

Not as rare as the 1864 William Penn only seen one and I do have a white metal R&W. Still great items I continue to hunt.
