Did officers of the South African Irish Regiment have a different caubeen? From certain pictures I've seen it appears that their caubeen is green with a different type of badge, as opposed to the standard brown. Were these worn in the field aswell?

I've attached a picture below for reference of the 1st South African Irish Regiment around 1940, if I'm not mistaken.

A photo taken in North Africa. Showing the head dress worn by the regiment, including the officer's green caubeen with large cap badge. This badge appears to have been only worn by officers. The smaller badge by all ranks, not just OR's.

Greetings irishhorse,

Thank you for confirming my suspicion. Perhaps a stupid question, but was the peaked cap with regimental badge standard issue for all officers of the Union Defence Force?

The Pipe Major appears to be wearing the pipers badge of the London Irish Rifles on the caubeen.

Yes looks to be a London Irish piper's badge. The South African Irish had a close affiliation with the LIR. And probably sourced some badges from them. They also wore a cast version of this badge, probably made in South Africa.
