What Uniform/Badge Is This?
Can you please help me identify this uniform?
If I had to guess, I'd say it was an RAF badge with a King's crown. Any guesses as to the year? Thanks, Cliff |

After a bit more investigation, it appears to be more like an officer's badge of the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS):
Can anyone confirm this? Was this (or a similar) badge used by anyone else? Would this date the photo between 1 Jul 1914 and 1 Apr 1918? What else can anyone tell me about this? Thanks again, Cliff |

It looks like the Royal Naval Air Service to me.

Would this cap (badge) have only been worn by an officer, or would ordinary servicemen also have worn it too?

This badge is shown and discussed in Malcolm Hobart's 'Badges and Uniforms of the Royal Air Force'. I don't have access to it right now, but can check later to see what it says, but it is definitely Royal Naval Air Service. Today ebay is showing an other rank's pilot's badge (repro):
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RNAS-Other-Ran...742.m153.l1262 There are also a couple of repro officer's badges like the one illustrated in the previous posts. |

Apology
Sorry, I just checked, and it's not in Hobart's book. For some reason i thought it was. My mistake.

The wonderful photograph is defiantly of an Officer of the Royal Naval Air Service, see http://www.britairforce.com/rnas_1.htm
Hope that the above is of interest, Insignia |
