Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Pair
Hi Guys,
My knowledge of individual regiment is basically nil. Looking through a pair of A+SH badges I note more differences than one can poke a stick at. The most noticible is the overall shape where one is a lot rounder than the other but also the bottom of each badge where on one the thistles extend past the wreath and the other where they are replaced by a bow. Why is this? Regards Chris |

The Argyll and Sutherland regiment has been around for a very long time. The basic design of the badge has remained the same but over the years and with different manufacturers slight variations have crept in. This badge can be found solid, domed, voided any number of times at different parts of the badge, different variations of wreath trim and stoks at the bottom, plus named regiments just to start with. I'm sure the advanced collectors on the forum can come up with all sorts of other variations to look for. I imagine a person could just collect this one regiment and it's varieties and spend their entire lifetime on it. The joy of collecting..... Jim

Hi Jim,
As you say - the joys of collecting. There are always lots of variations but these are usually at company level. The design difference between a bow and thistle stems though seems to be quite significant and different though. Regards Chris |

Hi Chris and Jim. You want variety Chris, here's a link showing the differences in Argyll badges, talk about getting lost here.....As to whether these are all goods, well let's just say I'll leave that to people with a lot more knowledge than me.

Hi Jo,
Thanks !!! Is it me but they don't seem to comment on the bow variation found in place of the thistle stalks as seen on one of my anodised aluminium cap badges? Does this bow exist on white metal items? Regards Chris |

G'day Chris, I have lots of these A&SH badges, and you have caused me to have another close look at them. I have four with what appears to be a bow, but is actually a thistle leaf hanging between the two stalks. Two are whitemetal, one brass, and a brass Dumbartonshire Volunteers, same shape as A&SH.

Hi Phil,
Thanks for joining in. Phil, attached is a 800 DPI scan of the area in question. It looks like a bow to me with the knot between the two ends of a rolled up piece of cloth. Also the thistle stalks are nowhere in line with the ends in question. Regards Chris |
