Smile HMSS South Wales Borderers Officer's cap badge

Hi all,

A recent edition - an 1898 HMSS Birmingham (maker marked Jennens & Co) South Wales Borderers cast Officer's badge (K&K 625) with large EGYPT letters (42.5mm diameter). It has silver lugs.

I have photographed it next to a smaller 36mm diameter unmarked cast silver badge with smaller EGYPT lettering (as per K&K 624). This badge has copper lugs.

The 1898 badge is is same as shown by 41st in the following thread:

Cheers Dean.

Thanks 41st,

Do you think these were the first batch of Officer's SWB badges made of this pattern by Jennens? Cheers Dean

That's what I've always thought & haven't seen anything with an earlier mark so far.

Always nice to see the lion passant on each lug.

hi all
really interesting thread.
just wondering what your thoughts are on this badge?
looks to have the 1898 HMSS Birmingham mark but maker looks to be F&S??
anyway, keen to hear your thoughts
thanks in advance

The date letter looks spot on, but an unusual looking badge for that period.

Agreed
Initially I rejected the badge until it was pointed out to me it was silver.
It wasn’t until closer inspection I found the hall marks and makers name.
I’ve seen the same finish to the rear looking rough and on another with brass lugs not silver on badges shown on this forum. But like you say, it just looks odd hence why I’m asking.

I’ve just checked mine and I have HM examples for Jennens (1898), Gaunt (1942) & a L&Co one marked Sterling. Also looking at my OSD examples I have them for Jennens & Gaunt. All of these are solid back.
This is the first Firmin one I’ve seen.

hi all
in this thread, Brookies badge No.4 looks very similar to the rear as mine except its a Pagri badge 38mm by Firmin & Son 1924 (B/ham marked to front)
