Default Colonel Ruttan Funeral Of(CBTTV/RCHA)

I have posted two pictures of a funeral procession. The pictures are of a casket being pulled by horses mounted by men in uniform and a number of officers marching along side. The smaller picture appears as though they have arrived at a building, I do not know if it is a church or not.

Printed on the back of the smaller picture is "Funeral, Col. Ruttan, Winnipeg, CBTTV, and RCHA

On the back of the larger photo is printed Funeral, Col. Ruttan, Winnipeg.

I assume RCHA stands for Royal Canadian Horse Artillery.

If anyone knows anything about Col. Ruttan, what CBTTV stands for or where I could possibly fnd out information on Col. Ruttan it would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Shame you do not have any initials.

However, is this him?

I'm not sure because this man was in the Winnipeg Grenadiers, rather than the RCHA.

If you put "Ruttan" into the Manitoba Historical Society's internal search engine you will find other Ruttans

Yes, it would be nice if I had some initials. I searched the Archives and it shows two other Ruttan's, Charles Millidge who became a Lt. Col. and Arthur Charles, who died in 1918 and became a Major with the 90th Winnipeg Rifles.

In the brief write up it for both of them it does not say anything about the RCHA.

Try sending a question, and the pic, to the Manitoba Historical Society.

They ought to know.

Default interesting photos.

From the elaborate size of this funeral procession, I would say this is likely the funeral for Col. RN Ruttan. Famous Winnipeg engineer and military man, his career stretched from the Fenian Raids to the First World War.

Ruttan died in 1925, which appears to jive with the automobiles seen in the first photo. I would guess that the RCHA notation refers more to the unit pulling the funeral caisson than to Ruttan himself. CBTTV?? could be some other unit or organization in attendance too.

Bill, you mean H.N. Ruttan (Colonel, 1910 and Brigadier (acting) 1916). According to the 1915 Militia List; Henry Norland Ruttan, served Fenian Raid, 1866 with 90th Winnipeg Bn. NorthWest Rebellion, 1885 and saw action at Fish Creek and Batoche. Also participated in operations against Chief Big Bear's Band.
