Default VC winners of the Great War

Some time ago, I remember there being mention of a stone being laid in every town that was home to a VC winner from the Great War. Since then, I have heard very little on the subject, so I thought that on the eve of the 100th anniversary 1918 it would be interesting to see which towns have in fact done this.

Although I originally grew up in Ware, I was born and have worked (except for a stint in the RN) in Hertford for the last 30 years or so and I am very proud of our local hero Alfred Burt of the Hertfordhire Regiment.

Interestingly, rivalries in the local area are very fierce (Ware and Hertford being one) and Cpl Burt came from Port Vale (a road, not the football club), which is right on the border of Hertford and Bengeo. Now depending on who you are, it is either Bengeo (some saying "lower" Bengeo) or Hertford, although it is really the same town of Hertford....

Anyway, I have waffled enough, so here is the stone from Hertford. It can be located by the gates to the Castle, next to the Templers pub. It would be really great if you could add pictures of your local VC winners to this thread....

Is it truly only V.C.s awarded during the “Great War”? Given the total numbers of V.C.s awarded since the first, why would not ALL receipients be afforded a stone? A good pal of mine from Inverness told me some time ago that one was to be placed in that City. I had not realized that it depended upon which War it was awarded in. Another question is, who is paying for it? Would it be I.W.G.C. Or another N.G.O. Or the “Government? Regards, D.J.

I think the paving stones have been to mark the 100 years since each award was made. Regards, Paul. PS IWGC changed to CWGC in 1960.

Norwich has laid a few, and some have been done in the villages.

Carluke one is in the Market Place.
Cheers, Tinto

Thanks to all those that have replied.

So, not very many at all then? I guess, given the fact that so many people have their faces firmly glued to mobile phones these days, they wouldn't even notice them!
