W.W.1 Chocolate Tin
Have had this quite a while and these other items which I thought I might share and perhaps find out about the "Canadian Bronze Ashtray?" don't know anything about this but is heavy and well made with a numbr to the bottom, Makers mark :- A.R. - Depose - No256 there appears to be something missing (badge?) would be great if someone had another and so enlighten me?
The Princess Mary Chocolate Tin is how I found it but guess the Medals have been sold off separately, which is a shame you can guess to a story in here but without a Named Medal it isn't complete! The Round could have been a near miss all bent out off shape! and a mothed out Bombers badge (have I this right?) The penny 1917, and a farthing 1907 (?) and a German walking badge for a walking stick? (In the tin? is this period or later? I don't know?) The matchbox is to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and to the rear a Butterfly above 1918, significance of the Butterfly has me thinking of Papillion with Steve McQueen film? Any thoughts on this please? Hope you enjoy these and maybe I'll learn something, post photo's shortly Last edited by billy; 19-04-20 at 03:33 PM. Reason: Add pictures |

Billy,
I would say with some certainty that your matchbox cover may well be to 9th Bn RWF who were part of 19th Western Division .The 19th Div sign was a Butterfly. The form of butterfly on your cover mimmicks that of the cloth sign. The cloth badge is indeed an Infantry Bombers Badge. Last edited by MH331; 19-04-20 at 03:39 PM. |

What a lovely find, I like the matchbox cover, in particular.

A lovely little lot. To shed a little light on the Bastei-Brucke (Bastion-Bridge):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bastei I don't see why it isn't contemporary;a memento perhaps found in a German dugout, on a corpse etc and yes probably for a walking stick. I have a similar little lot from a WW1 Canadian soldier and he had kept a couple of German tunic buttons as keepsakes. |

I doubt the 20mm hispano canon has anything to do with this lot other than just being in there with the rest of the items.

Thanks all! Good to know about the matchbox holder, many thanks!
As to the rusty round when is this from then? I have to admit that I thought all where from same period! Have posted the Ashtray in the Canadian section can't really see thus being identified but one never knows? all the best billy |

Can't identify the rusty projectile, but would certainly assume it was a souvenir in someway connected with the lot.
The ashtray is not necessarily military, but it does have a hole wherein some sort of badge was placed? I love to find little historical lots like this. CB

The matchbox cover is absolutely fabulous and you have a very poignant collection. Thank for posting.

As said the projectile seems to be a 20mm ball round hispano cannon shell as used in later spitfires for example and its probably been in the ground 50 years before being put with this lot.

Interesting little lot Billy, thanks for sharing, interesting comments about the 20mm, which i think is hard to discern. What would the difference be between an Hispano 20m Round and a Becker 20mm Round? Regards Mark
