14th/20th hussars clarification needed
All,
Still confused about the variations to be seen with the the gilding metal OR's14/20 H post 1931 to 1968 cap badges. There are those with lugs and sliders about; and some with FR on the chest, some without, and even ones with the orb on different sides. Are these being restruck and how to tell? Thanks, CB |

The ones with FR on the chest are for the 14/20th's successor unit, the King's Royal Hussars.

Thanks lettman, one last question on this. Original 2ndWW badge with loops/lugs or slider.

It shoudl have a slider i.m.o. Lugged badges are more than often collars rather than caps.

Aha! Some tidbits here at last and thank you. There does seem to be some confusion as to what constitutes a collar or cap badge here. I would also tend to feel that a badge with slider is correct, but the collar badges for OR's were the cartwheel; at least in the ww2 era if I am thinking right.

There were definately FR marked cap badges in existance before the KRH badge of the 1990s. One is shown in Wilkinsons Book badge 119 - it is on a slider.
The post war a/a ones do not have the FR mark but do come in 3 variations. The first all gold issue with the head facing to the eagle's right hand side, a later issue in black finish which has the RH facing head and a LH facing version. Alan |

Ive seen photos of the Bandmaster(1980`s) wearing a frock type coat with facing eagle collar badges rather the circlet type.

14th Hussars?
Hi All
I recently posted this badge in my cavalry album as a 14/20th Hussars cap badge. It has been suggested that this is actually a 14th Hussars NCO's cap badge from before the 1922 amalgamation. Can anybody give any more information? If it proves to not be 14/20th I'll need to find one for my collection Thanks in advance. Cheers, Alex |

A standard ORs cap badge for the 14/20 were in brass with a slider. Whether yours is an 14/20th NCOs and/or a 14th Hussars collar is open to question.
This is the not the first time I have heard of the NCOs of the 14th Hussars wearing something other than the usual pre 1915 oval+eagle overlay, the large 'cartwheel' garter and scroll or the half size garter and scroll. There might be a picture of the eagle in use pre WW1 on the forum. From memory it was definately pre-war in blues hats or similiar. Last edited by Alan O; 15-05-10 at 05:42 PM. |

c1900 the Eagle was worn in Gilt or Gilding Metal on the collar of the tunic and the Frock coat. What metal is that one made from?

14th and 14th/20th Hussars badges
Hi Alex
These are the 14th Hussars collar badges in white metal, similar to your initial post. The next one is the 14th Hussars Cap Badge, with slider, in gilding metal. The slider is stamped FIRMIN LONDON, in small print, on a slight curvature. The next on is that of the 14th/20th Hussars. I hope this helps Best wishes Gordon |

The "Cow-pats" as we knew them Because of their nice berets...... One of the Yeomanry Squadrons wore the "Cow-pat" beret also during the early 90's.... I cant remember which one now. Something to do with their OC being a "Black Chicken"? I think it was a Wiltshire Squadron.....probably B Squadron (Wessex)?

14th and 14th/20th Hussars Headdress Badges
Quote:
I thought you may find the attached photographs of interest. Although not entirely complete they will give you an idea of the general sequence of the badges worn, initially by the 14H and then by the 14/20H. I think they are all in the right sequence; I have yet to date them all but most of them are self evident. Best wishes Gordon PS They will come in three posts. |
