Panzer Schirmmutze - WWII German Armoured Troops Forage Cap.
Another of my rather the worse for wear caps, affordable for me because of its somewhat less than pristine condition.
Identified as a "panzer" cap by the pink "waffenfarbe" arm of service piping it would've been worn during the 1933 - 45 period. |

Yes, I'll just view the damage as lending "character".
Notice the repairs to the top? I read years ago in American publications about filling a moth hole with a blob of glue ("Elmer's glue" was the one that used to be mentioned), shaving the nap of the cloth and pressing the shaved fibres down on to the glue to camouflage the hole. It's not something I've done, I think if I camouflaged any damage there'd have to be a lot of it and I'd insert rather than glue a matching fabric in the hole. |

Leigh,
I don't think the damage distracts from the cap at all, I had an Infantry version of the same cap myself which was in a much worse state than this. Adds to the character in my opinion. Simon. |

I certainly prefer slightly damaged or rusted preserved originality to the repaired, repainted, badges or transfers replaced approach to the restoration of caps and hemets.
