Steve,

My initial hunch has not changed. I think about 75% are duds.
Also a lot seem to be from the same faker. Have you bought a lot of one person/dealer?

regards

Simon,

I've bought from several dealers at several venues. I think I've bought off 2 dealers twice each & the rest, just the once.

I'm not surprised to have picked up some duds but disappointed to have so many.

Any chance you can tell me what the giveaways are, like Jelly Terror has?

Cheers

Steve,

My apologies.

The picture below shows a 'voided' crown. It has areas where the metal has been cut away or omitted.

In your example, the crown has no such spaces; the whole area is solid and displays no cut-outs. You may on occasion also encounter others referring to these voided areas as being 'pierced'. I'm sure there are other words in usage, but these, I would say, are probably the most commonly used.

Regards,

JT

Lastly, I thought you might be interested in seeing an example of the 11th County of London badge, with a voided centre:

(Apologies for the poor-quality image).

Thanks for the picture of a good one.

Disappointed it's a dud but I got it for less than a tenner, so not too painful!

Hi,
I'm afraid your 16th Welsh is a common copy. Here's a real one on the left shown against the common copy for comparison.

Before you go much further with your collecting you should get yourself a good reference book, or a couple of them and study some of the albums on here.

I bought Gaylor a few days after starting to collect. Whilst it's been useful in identifying the badges, there's precious little information in there on how to spot a fake.

I'll get studying the albums.

Steve

What I find useful when looking to get a certain badge is start be doing a search here on the Forum. That will, almost always, bring up threads that have discussed that badge, often with pics of genuine examples and references, or pics to known fakes.

Hope this helps

Colin

Yeah, I can see I'm going to have to be more focussed in my approach.

When I started, you could say that every badge I saw was one that I wanted as I had none. The only knowledge I had was to look for a clean strike, which I've tried to do.

As I never know what I'm going to come across, I'll just have to study a handful of badges & aim for them & then repeat.

Steve

From what I can see from the pics in your folder;

The Cambridgeshire is good. Variant spelling, WW2
The Guards Machine Gun is unfortunately a fake, should have a slider.
The East Surrey LOOKS ok, and I think I can see a “crimp” mark on the shoulder of the slider.
The Northamptonshire looks good to me
The Royal Artillery looks like it has a strengthener to the rear? Looks good to me.
The Royal Berkshire looks ok
The Lincolnshire is good.
The Leicestershire looks to be ok,
The East Yorkshire looks ok
The South Staff might be ok

Be interested to hear others opinions.

Cheers

Colin

I like the look of the Hertfordshire. It looks to be the same as this one http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ictureid=97543

As Colin said, the Cambridgshire (note the missing "E") is a WW2 variant. Rob (Sonofacqms) is a bit of an authority on this one.

Not all bad..... And don't worry, most of us have a tin of duds Even those that won't admit it

Andy

What, only one tin? I've had to empty mine on more than one occasion.
