Latest finds
A few of the badges that came my way recently. Just trying to weed out the bad ones, any thoughts or comments are welcome.

9L and 15/19H are repros. The 17/21L and Remounts are genuine.

I am not keen on the 9L either.
The 15/19th I am not so sure about as it's not the usual fake. The rest are ok. |

I must say that if that 15/19H is fake, it is the best looking of the lot. The 17/21L is the poorest quality I have ever seen on a genuine badge; the die is ruined. The Remount is not very nice either.
Where are these badges coming from? CB

The 15/19H is appalling and worst of the lot. Note the rounded letter ends and coarse seeding as present on the majority of the Marsh fakes. Here it is MM1219.
The 9L is also from the die featured in the MM catalogue. Some of these fakes are now 50 years old, so patina, general age and condition cannot always be relied upon. The Remounts was made by Lambourne’s, so is WW1. I feel the 17L with ‘ears’ is likely WW1 vintage too owing to the poor strike. The 9L and 15/19H post 1970s via Mr Marsh’s suppliers. |

Thanks, Luke, C.B. and Alan for your comments.
I thought the 15/19th had a good chance of passing the test as I compared it against the one shown on the IWM site and put the slight differences I seen down to manufacturing differences, but this is why I post my badges online here. I simply have not got the experience or the eye for the minute detail that changes a badge from a treasured piece of history into a worthless piece of scrap metal. Looking at the 17th/21st, I was positive it was a bad copy as its just a mess ! It all goes to show that this is not an easy hobby to get hooked on for the new collector, as it can be (and is) very costly to say the least. The remounts, again was compared to ones I seen posted in the gallery and dealers sites. I thought it was ok so I am happy it has come back as such. Thanks again for your help. Kind regards, Jim |

....it has been double stamped. Looks factory to me.. just, like you say, a poor quality stamp.

Apropos the previous post - it is known as a brocage - meaning that it has stuck to the die and gives the double impression as Griff notes.
As for museums, the KLR badges at the IWM and the NAM and - of course - the Museum of Liverpool - are absolutely genuine! (Having worked at a museum for the last 36 years, I'm sure that my colleagues at other museums are as strict as we were / are.) |

I've made comment on the IWM collection badges before due to this example of a 1st type Tyneside Scottish badge- a scarce badge and it looks to me to be a copy. https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/30076860
