FANY Badges & Buttons
These First Aid Nuring Yeomanry illustrations have been submitted to me for possible inclusion in the military history publication Bugle & Sabre. I am wondering however if there is any significance in the different wording on the two FANY cap badges - is it possible that one is from the First World War, while the other is from the Second?

Hello
It is not the whole story but the 'FANY Women's Transport Section' badge must date from after 1937ish when the unit changed it's name. I am not sure if this means that your first badge is earlier or not as they may have used both badges in tandem or changed their name back again. I am sure some one will be along with the full story in due course. As far as the button is concerned I have only ever seen the one type, simply 'FANY'. Regards Roger |

Thank you Roger - That is more or less what I have been thinking, and is as good an explanation as any. i have just realised that Honeysuckle Weeks, in her role as "Sam" in Foyle's War, wears her badge with the central cross at a 45 degree angle, so if we use these illustrations in the article we mighr have to alter them slightly (?)

A period photo is your best guide to positioning and I am sure someone will post one soon! Regards Roger |

'Sam' was badged as Mechanised Transport Corps, not FANY. Regards, Paul.

She frequently described herself as "MTC" upon being asked what she did in the various episodes too!
I have to say that I much prefer "Sam's" actual little sister Perdita, she was super in "The Great Fire" last year! Last edited by Frank Kelley; 05-07-15 at 04:29 PM. |

I hope a more knowledgeable member shines his light on your first badge as the thin lettering and strange non bronze colour look odd to me.

I am still not entirely sure of the relationship (if any) between the FANY and the ATS. Marian Gamwell, head of the FANYs, was under considerable pressure from Helen Gwynne-Vaughan to merge her unit with the Auxiliary Territorial Service, and this resulted in a split, whereby Miss Gamwell remained in charge of the "Free FANYs" - the unit that became closely associated with Bletchley Park and the SOE. Denis Healey later stated that ‘The FANYs were the aristocracy of the womens services'.

My mother was a FANY Trooper who was dragooned into taking commission in the ATS. As she told it the reason there was a problem merging the ATS and the ATS was a huge difference in status between the two organisations - for instance FANY Troopers were allowed access to officer's messes - as a result joining the FANY as a Trooper was a much more attractive proposition than taking a commission in the ATS for the daughters of the "gentry". As a result the ATS found it very hard indeed to recruit officers and in the end the majority of FANY were compulsorily transferred into the ATS many as officers.
Here she is as a FANY Trooper and a frame of her medals and badges. Former FANY wore the FANY arm flash during their ATS service - they also wore their chinstraps over the top of their caps. Eddie PS the row of regimental badges were worn by ATS attached to male units - my mother was Battery Captain of a Mixed Heavy Anti-Aircraft Battery on Hailing Island. |
