Very good question. I suspect that armies are onto such 'dodges, but given some of the court decisions one reads I wonder. I have a friend who deals with vetereans of an army and says that some of the claims which result in compensation are entirely without merit. OTOH, that doesn't justify not treating vets with respect and support.
Beards and breathiung gear are certainly an issue. The Canadian Army, several decades ago, accepted a turbannned Sikh for basic training but he opted out when told he'd have to wear a helmet over it for the grenade range. Not sure what the current policy is.
