Hi Chris. Here pictures of a black (not blackENED) ano cap badge to The Light Infantry, marked FIRMIN. LONDON. Would be very interested to see any other black (as manufactured) ano badges. Regards, Mike.

Here you go Mike; a few black Agonised Ally cap-badges. They are not easy to photograph and I hope you can see at least some detail on these images.

Love to see a better image of the black "Agonised" Motto Has it been painted black? I have looked at yours in Paintshop and the back of the Motto tells me that its an early 1970s AA, the one that has the B'HAM mark on the slider and the Gaunt London mark on the scroll. So this must have been an in Regiment "painted" AA.... rather than a factory made black finished AA.

Here is a factory made close up....

Below is yours against its normal AA.

Griff, you could be right and I am not sure abt this one, but it definitely is not staybright underneath the black surface. Am not at home right now, so unable to provide a better image.

The slider is also missing, so it is not really a great AA badge.

Don't suppose your one is for sale?

Awra best

William

Just added yours against the normal AA above....

William.... the black AA that I show is not for sale (sorry). They do come up from time to time though..... and remember that they are a NI 1980s issue .....so dont pay mega bucks for them

I would love to see a better image of yours though.... it could be an early factory made by the sound of it..... if you say that its not an AA finish under the black?

* There was a white metal blackened version (with a short slider) that was made for "Officers" on attachment in Oman (1980s)..... but the one you show is not that because its the aluminium body.

Hi Guys,

All the OFFICIAL subdued A/A cap badges were 'painted up'.

The 'factory' ones were either PRI items that were commissioned at regimental/corps level or dealer knock offs.

Regards

Chris

Chris

A PRI purchase would still be worn ..... and a painted up AA would still be worn I think Mac (ex-17/21) has already stated that they would paint up their AA for exercise.

I have pictures of the 17/21 in NI in 1970 and their Motto was the untouched AA...... I have images of the 17/21 in NI during the 1980s and their Motto is subdued.

well some are were official dress.plenty of photos of black Para badges being worn and Devon and Dorset too.Quite probably the regiment paid for them to be blackened at the factory. As other Regt/Sqns pay for their own badges.

Hi Griff,

Absolutely and I make that comment in my book on page 105 and 193 but they were never officially authorised by the Army Dress Committee who, during the time of the Northern Irish 'troubles', the sole controllers of the authorisation of cap badges at an official, MoD, level.

Regards

Chris

Chris

The factory NI "subdued" Motto :-

Firmin = Bronze (Brass? base, if marked then: "FIRMIN & SONS" as found on the AA in the same production period)
Gaunt = Black AA (Same as a specific B'HAM marked AA); Bronze (Wm base with Long slider); Blackened (Wm base with Long & short sliders) - The Wm base is the same for the Chromed version.
TKS = Bronze (Marked :- London Badge & Button Co Ltd)

Devon and Dorset was worn prior to amalgamation as a working dress badge. Plenty of images in "The Regiment" magazine.

Guys,

I think you have missed everything I have said here.

Subdued badges were authorised by the ADC but there were always the normal A/A cap badge that was 'painted up'. This was the OFFICIALLY authorised subdued badge and was never factory made. The ADC decision that decided this was No. D. 2747 and was formalised at the 217th Meeting of the Army Dress Committee, held on the 5th September 1973. See page 193 of my book.

Therefore, any subdued badge (as opposed to badges that were always officially black) that are colour dyed black, by the normal process of manufacturing an A/A cap badge (see chapter 11: The Manufacturing Process), are either regimental/corps PRI items or, far more likely, dealer knock offs.

The only subdued factory made A/A cap badges that I know off that were authorised at regimental level, by the commanding officer, and purchased via regimental funds (as opposed to the public purse) are those of the Devon & Dorset and the King's Regt.

Regards

Chris
