Default Firmin Button Dates?

One for the Button Boffs

I have two "PAO Leicestershire Yeomanry Cavalry" buttons, both Firmins marked.

1) Firmin & Sons Ld 153 Strand London & 47 Warwick St
2) Firmin & Sons 153 Strand London

Is it possible to "date" the buttons from these two makers marks? If so, what are the dates for each (I am guessing pre 1870)?

Many thanks in advance

I defer to the button gurus on this, but the info I have says as follows:

Firmin and Sons LTD was formed in 1875
They were located at The Wheatsheaf, Near Somerset House,Strand (later called 153 Strand and 153/155 Strand) - 1760-1894

Philip and Samuel Firmin were formed 1841, and assume this was a son?

This at least dates the first one I guess, but am sure someone can do better!

PM me if you would like the info. I often find it useful as it covers quite a few makers

Cheers, Neil

This is from a previous thread

anyone is interested the booklet to which the Grand Duchess refers is currently available as a PDF on The Society for Historical Archaeology’s website. The publication in question is called Military Button Manufactures from the London Directories 1800-1899 and was compiled by Peter Nayler of the Archaeological Services section of Canada’s National Historic Sites (1993); ISBN 0-662-21135-9. It certainly seems to be a useful little guide, and a good starting point for further research.

Regards

Martin

With thanks to Martin

Interesting PB. Tracked down to http://www.sha.org/research_resource...01800-1899.pdf

Mine is a MHS article from 1977 - William T Tate. I know you have this one!

I have just realised that the c1812-40 "Hamburger & Co London" Buttons ....... according to the dates given in the above *.pdf cant be correct? The PAOLYC were not given the title of "Prince Albert's own" until 1844..... therefore the given dates c1812-40 for this makers mark is wrong?

Griff

On my list Hamburger are not present on the list "London from 1840" This seems to concur with the other information. If you send me a PM I can send a PDF file.

Must be another explanation?
Cheers, Neil
