Becal Buttons
I found these in an old tin yesterday and thought I'd Google the maker 'Becal Button Works Ltd. B'Ham' and all I could find was one reference on a Polish language site. Are they well known at all? Remind me what the buttons are. Possibly British Army General Service from the 1890s?? Thanks for any help.

Thanks Fougasse. It's more the maker that I was interested in as I couldn't find
much about them on the Net. |

Hi there,
Difficult to tell from the pictures, but I think the manufacturer or backmark could be: "REGAL BUTTON WORKS Ltd". They are listed as : Regal Buttons Ltd. 52, Porchester St., Aston (1936) and Grosvenor Road, Birmingham. Cheers Ian |

Thanks Ian. You're probably right but the center letter still looks like a 'C' to me.

There was a "Becal Button Works, Birmingham, U.K., 1901-1952".
Source: Dating Buttons; A Chronology of Button Types, Makers, Retailers & Their Backmarks. Unfortunately no additional information other than the listing quoted above. |

I contributed that list to the author of this book, but I now think it is a misprint for Regal.

The buttons shown look like officer service dress bronzed buttons. Rgds, Thomas. |

Perhaps a tarnished other ranks? - sliding shank, not fixed; pressed back, not spun.

As Thomas said in post 10 above "These are General Service buttons, as worn by anyone without specific unit buttons, as the name implies, so impossible to pin down to a specific Regiment".
Dated as he said in post 2 above "The King's Crown suggests 1902-1953" although you may be able to narrow the use of yours down a little considering where they were found. Roger |
