Interesting WAAC Badge

[Home Guard]

I was recently given this WAAC cap badge and was so surprised and pleased to get it. When I first got it I Thought it was some how darkened on the upper area, but in closer inspection find that at one time it was painted a medium blue, on both the front and the back. I know that some WAAC sweetheart pins have the letters painted blue, but on a cap badge it seems most unusual.

Any ideas why this might have been done?
