Maroon beret with unusual backing
Gents, picked up at Chatham yesterday in the 50p box, a rather well worn maroon beret, with an unusual black oblong badge backing.
The silhouette of the badge created by the fading of the back material made me realise it was a 1 RGR example. Shown purely for interest- not sure if they surface too often. Regards all Bess |

Cheers Mark- it comes very 'pre loved' but happy with it.
I reckon we make our own luck in this game! All the best Bess |

More likely to be Tartan than black.
Nice. Marc

To be honest Marc, I thought that too, but the beret I have has a black loose weave fabric 'oblong' in landscape.
All the closest images I could find online appear the same. Perhaps it mirrors their black triangle unit identifier? |

2019 Gurkha recruits getting assignments shows some receiving maroon berets with black backing patches.

Not black but rifle green patch - Gurkhas are rifle regiments and normally wear a rifle green beret. The green patch was originally worn on a maroon beret by parachute trained RGR soldiers (only) when 1st Bn RGR was part of 5th Airborne Brigade in the late 1990s. (The Gurkha Reinforcement Company in 2 PARA in the same time frame wore a maroon beret with the RGR badge but without the backing.) When 1 RGR again took on the Airborne role in 2015 they resurrected the maroon beret with rifle green patch for the whole battalion, not just the paratroopers who had passed P Company.
