Default Unknown Lion head badge

Claimed to be a British cadet badge but is probably not. Is it South African?

Wesley College Melbourne has a lion head atop its crest but the hat/collar badges are a lion passant .

It is certainly a possibility if it is a collar based on this lion

There is a WW2 US unit distiction badge which is very similar, a friend dug one up in N Devon recently, but I can't find an image of it at the moment.
