A Liver bird?
This is 60mm diameter - and has remained unidentified for the last 20+ years.
Have any of the experts any ideas? Thanks, Mike img127.jpg |

Mike,
Your particular badge is one which was worn by by Sergeants of the Liverpool City Police above their arm chevrons. This particular style (without Crown) dates this pre. 1929. There are two versions of different manufacture. The cotton embroidered type (the one pictured) was worn on greatcoats and wet weather garments. A version in silver wire was worn on tunic jackets. To qualify for wearing the badge the Sergeant had to have held the rank for five years without conviction for a discipline offence. The red and white backing is of no significance from the police point of view and may have been added later. Dave. |

Dave,
I presume this is a picture of the silver wire version. P.B.

That's amazing - thank you very much. The version I have is actually gold wire embroidered. All I need to do now is find someone who collects pre-1929 Liverpool City Police insignia - I'm sure such people exist somewhere! Mike |

Yes, your photo is spot on. Mike, Sorry mate, I meant to address my comments to P.B. I can't help with the ID of your gold badge. It could have been used by uniformed staff employed by the City Council. Apologies if I mislead you. Dave. |

Sorry Mike and Dave,
I also misunderstood ,I thought Mikes badge was the Police one, but thanks Dave for the identification of my Liver Bird. Any idea what the ribbon the badge is attached to could be for ? Now I know the badge is not military it is outside my area of interest so I need to find a good home for it. P.B.

A Liver bird?
P.B.
I've no idea why the red and white "bity" should be behind the badge. I have several photos of liverpool Police Sergeants' but all show just the Liver above the chevrons and nothing else. Dave. |
