Today's find!
Hi Guys,
Picked this up today. It was listed as a American Ordance collor. I do'nt believe that it is and have my own ideas on it! What do you guys think? Value your input. Dave |

Dave,
Not American. Wrong flaming grenade for starters and American insignia doesn't use lugs. I'll let the British experts say exactly what this is. Don

Looks similar to the Royal Marine Artillery cap or collar, can't be sure or Royal Artillery collar.

From the squat shape of the grenade I suspect you have a Royal Marine Artillery cap badge - pre 1922. David

So - is the badge brass or white metal ? It would help to identify - and eliminate - previous opinions. David

The Volunteer Artillery. 1859-1908.
Good evening.
Whilst the two Volumes by Kipling & King are indeed illuminating, the most comprehensive and accurate publications on the badges of the Artillery are the three volumes written by the late Norman Litchfield. The Volume on the Volunteer Artillery co-authored by Ray Westlake and published in 1982 identifies this item as one of at least three versions of white metal general grenade pattern collar badges some 1.5 inches high in use from 1859-1908. This item most closely resembles Fig. 31 on Pg.17 of said publication. Given the depth of the late Mr Litchfield`s knowledge I would suspect an attribution as an other ranks` collar to the Volunteer Artillery (ie. the whole of the Volunteer Artillery) is correct. Any collector interested in the Artillery and its badges should own all three Volumes as well as his various publications on Artillery shoulder titles and his beloved Artillery Pagri badges. Enjoy. This badge was also used by some of the Colonial Volunteer units, like the Natal Field Artillery of South Africa. Regards Andrew

Hi David, glad you posted it as I'm glad my badge knowledge is always improving from being a member of the forum. I thought I recognized the flames from Peter Doyle's book on British WW1 badges.
You on vacation in TX or business, and yes thank god for air conditioning. Same here today in NY, in the 90's with high humidity. Nothing like back home. Have a good rest of your trip. Regards Simon. |
